Definitely printing the 90-95% chart. I also like monitoring a 3-5% deficit in sprint times within the workout and won’t hesitate to shut someone down at 2 or 3 reps if the time is increasing too much despite an adequate recovery interval.

Comment on Acceleration Ladders and Speed Hurdles in Team Sport: Scientific Investigation by Kevin O’Donnell https://simplifaster.com/articles/acceleration-ladders-speed-hurdles/#comment-105402 Tue, 28 Nov 2023 16:51:33 +0000 https://simplifaster.com/articles/?p=1420#comment-105402 Choreographing the incremental increases of an optimal stride pattern was the purpose of the “stick drill”. Simply making marks on the track does not provide the athlete with a cue they can feel behind them where the foot strikes. So coaches would take sticks and set them at prescribed intervals. The problem was the sticks had to be reset each time which was time consuming. Gary Winkler devised a device where the sticks
were adjustable and connected with string to allow for fast and easy reset. We were instructing a Level 2 when he debuted the idea and with his endorsement, Speed Dynamics improved the concept and made “Acceleration Ladders” available. It was always frustrating when the device would be used by those who did not understand the purpose. In short, we found the training to be very beneficial for both developing and elite athletes.

Comment on The Role of the Arms in Sprinting by Al Forsyth https://simplifaster.com/articles/arms-role-sprint-technique/#comment-105388 Mon, 27 Nov 2023 22:57:09 +0000 https://simplifaster.com/?p=9700#comment-105388 Presently writing a paper on this for a Kinesiology class. I agree with you write throughout this.

Where we are going with more often this year: “Video feedback showing the athlete what they are doing in slow motion for reference is perhaps the most potent way to address arms that are not productive.”

I have never noticed when watching the pole drop, the angle of them being so different in the last three steps.

I dealt with shin splints and this training has helped me prevent getting them since.

Comment on A Crash Course in Coaching Middle School Track by Amy https://simplifaster.com/articles/coaching-keys-middle-school-track/#comment-105377 Mon, 27 Nov 2023 18:46:14 +0000 https://simplifaster.com/?p=9426#comment-105377 Thank you for this! My kids will love the metaphor of animals to sprint speed. I’m wondering: Do you have any suggestions for my girl miler who is a minute faster than everyone else? She is very social and more likely to want to stay with the second girl at practice – but I know she needs some extra speed work (or at least should be working out at a higher level occasionally). Thanks!

Cooper –

Thanks for your question. Absolutely! This is a great fit for athletes to temper their arousal pre-meet or practice. I’d recommend integrating it into whatever ritual they’re already using. These cues are simple and should not distract from important preparations that may more directly influence performance.

I hope that helps.
